ESA's Cherokee County solar energy generating facility ready for grid-connection

Lake Mary, FL., October 5, 2011 - ESA Renewables, a leading turnkey solar system provider, announced this week the completion of its solar photovoltaic energy generating system in Murphy, North Carolina.

The 999 kW solar array is located the tight-knit community of Murphy in the heart of Cherokee Country, North Carolina.

Situated on approximately five acres, almost 4,500 ground-mounted photovoltaic (PV) solar modules which will produce estimated 1.3 million kilowatt-hours each year. This is enough to power more than 150 average sized homes.

Additionally, grid-connectivity allows the PV system to reduce carbon emissions of 936 tons of CO2 a year, which is the equivalent of 4,681 trees sequestered annually.

"The positive impact that this photovolatic system has had, and will continue to have on the community, the environment, and the movement towards green energy is something in which everyone involved in seeing it to fruition can be extremely proud," said Jeffrey Burkett, President of ESA Renewables.

The installation of this clean energy project has had a large impact through job creation. Approximately 10 construction workers, supervisors, electricians and engineers have been employed since its inception.

The farm was designed, engineered, procured, constructed and managed by ESA. ESA will operate and maintain the farm for the duration of the 10-year contract.

The Benefits of Thermally Conductive Acrylics

Heat trapped and not dissipated by the components can lead to premature component failure and costly repair and replacement. To prevent this from happening, thermal conductivity can be assured and electrical shorting prevented by using thermally conductive acrylics. Because of the insulating characteristics of the acrylic adhesive, the heat is not retained and costly repairs and replacements can be avoided.

Self-Leveling for Good Contact

Using thermally conductive acrylics that offers self-leveling or self-shimming properties can ensure the adhesive has a good initial contact with a substrate. This type of leveling action reduces the adhesive to a uniform layer thickness of .005 - .007" on each application. Adhesion shear strength is important to bonding performance, but the desired adhesion strength cannot be achieved if the adhesive does not have a good initial contact.

No Mechanical Devices Needed

Another benefit of thermally conductive acrylic adhesives is that they replace mechanical devices and silicone greases. When using this type of structural acrylic adhesive, it is not necessary to use mechanical devices such as fasteners, clips, screws or rivets for assembly. Thermally conductive acrylics even negate the need for silicone greases that can trap contaminants. The adhesive alone is sufficient in providing the most efficient thermal transfer between transistors or microprocessors and their heat sinks.

Anaerobic Pipe Sealants for Sprinkler Systems

Anaerobic pipe sealants/adhesives are superior to other sealing methods. They contain no solvents and do not shrink, stretch, split, rot, distort, wear-our, or relax and joints never loosen under vibration. Pressure cycling does not weaken or loosen the sealant path.

Because the sealant path is formed when parts are made-up, that is, threaded together, the plastic shim formed during cure is truly a "custom" seal. Sealant not forced out cures to a helical path in the thread roots to form an exacting match of the surface irregularities. The shim mirrors and fills all the voids, scratches, and thread nicks preset in even the best-machined straight or pipe threads. Unlike Teflon tape, any non-confined or excess sealant material does not cure and pose the threat presented by shredded tape fouling valves or circuit elements.

Adhesive Failure

Adhesive failure is the failure of the adhesive to stick or bond with the material to be adhered. Adhesives may fail in one of two ways:

A cohesive failure is a structural failure of the adhesive in which adhesive remains on both substrate surfaces, but the two items separate.

Two substrates can also separate through structural failure of one of the substrates; this is not a failure of the adhesive. In this case the adhesive remains intact and is still bonded to one substrate and the remnants of the other.

For example, when one removes a price label, adhesive usually remains on the label and the surface. This is cohesive failure. If, however, a layer of paper remains stuck to the surface, the adhesive has not failed.

In working with power generating motors, any type of adhesive failure can be catastrophic. But more importantly, an adhesive needs to be of the correct formula type to meet the requirements of the job.

In some instances of power generation, high strength bonding is needed. For example: Hernon's Cylinlock 846 is the high strength analog of grade 822, yielding shear strengths of 4,000psi. Providing relatively quick cures, outstanding solvent resistance, and improved reliability for severe service applications.

Another application may call for eliminating vibrational loosening of screws, in which once a product is applied you are still able to easily disassemble or adjust the screws. In this instance, Nuts N’ Bolts 420 would be ideal. This product is engineered to eliminate vibrational loosening of setscrews, cap screws and machine screws while allowing for easy disassembly or adjustment.

Another one of Hernon's products is ReAct 767, a high performance tough acrylic adhesive designed primarily for securing ceramic permanent magnet segments in motor magnet bonding applications. Leak Proofing Parts

Porosity problems cause castings, powder metal parts, plastics, ceramics and other porous substrates to leak through the body. Production management is challenged to solve this problem due to increased production demands, soaring scrap costs as well as quality control. Inherently, powdered metal parts have high percentages of voids. After sintering and loss of the wax binders, impregnation improves the machinability of sintered parts.

Porosity sealants are the solution to leak proofing of parts. They offer improved machinability and surface quality for painting and plating. The hardened resins exhibit superior chemical resistance and elevated temperature stability.

Using a porosity sealant, the microscopic voids in the parts where potential leaks occur are filled by the low viscosity resin and sealed permanently. The parts leave the impregnating process without surface residue and can then be used in production.

When used in preparation for plating or painting processes, the impregnation process also eliminates absorption of plating materials, like acids, or painting rep solvents, that could later bleed out of the pores causing finishes to discolor, blister, pit or peel.

Porosity sealants promote consistent, rather than intermittent, tool contact on the filled surfaces. Less shock translates into greater tool life and better dimensional control on impregnated parts.

Porosity sealants also offer superior stability and predictability during the impregnation process. Comparison to "classic" sealing materials like sodium silicate shows the clear performance superiority of porosity sealing impregnation. Full and complete sealing, without limitations, is the norm.

ESA Renewables Completes 1MW Solar Farm in Less Than Three Weeks

North Carolina solar farm quickly begins to generate clean energy through efficient installation

Lake Mary, FL July 8, 2011 – ESA Renewables, LLC, a leading turnkey solar system provider, has completed a 1MW solar farm in North Carolina in just two and one-half weeks.

The 1MW solar farm is installed on Wingate Road in Murphy, North Carolina. The installation consists of approximately 4,340 ground-mounted Canadian Solar modules.

"Prior to construction, ESA needed to moved 26-feet of dirt to level the site for optimal positioning of the solar array. For another company, this might have been considered a difficult solar installation, but our team managed just fine," said Jeffrey Burkett, president of ESA Renewables.

The PV system will produce an estimated 1.3 million kilowatt-hours each year. This clean energy is enough to power more than 150 average sized homes. Using the solar energy generated from this solar installation reduces carbon emissions by 936 tons of CO2 a year - the equivalent of 4,681 trees sequestered annually.
"ESA Renewables prides itself in providing working turnkey systems in the most efficient way possible," added Burkett. "This project is further proof of ESA's commitment to making 'going solar' easy."

The solar farm was designed, engineered, procured, constructed and managed by ESA Renewables, LLC. It created 26 local jobs for this small community of less than 2,000 residents. All of the power generated will be sold back to the Tennessee Valley Authority providing power to the local utility grid. As Brasstown’s newest solar farm is commissioned, thirty-six area residents are employed

Lake Mary, FL June 28, 2011 – ESA Renewables, LLC, a leading turnkey solar system provider, created thirty-six local jobs in the Brasstown, NC area for the construction and operation of their 1MW solar installation.

The Brasstown solar array benefits the community in a two-fold way. It has brought work for local citizens and it provides clean solar energy which is sold to the Tennessee Valley Authority.

The 1MW solar farm is estimated to generate 1.3 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year, which is enough to power more than 150 average sized homes and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by over 1,600 tons annually. This is equivalent to the carbon dioxide emissions from the consumption of more than 167,000 gallons of gasoline.

“The installation of this solar project has had and will continue to have a large community impact in many ways, specifically through job creation,” said Jeffrey Burkett, president of ESA Renewables. “Thirty-six local construction workers, supervisors, electricians and engineers have been employed since its inception.”

The solar farm is located on a 5 acre parcel in Brasstown, North Carolina. This solar array consists of 4,242 Canadian Solar silicon solar modules and was completed in just one month, a comparatively quick amount of time. The solar project is visible from one of the main roads in the area, Highway 64.

Castel Giorgio array resides in harmony with the natural environment

Lake Mary, Fl., May 26th, 2011 – ESA announced today that it recently commissioned a 2-megawatt (MW) solar farm in the municipality of Castel Giorgio, in the region of Umbria Italy.

The solar farm was constructed in approximately five months on 14-acres of undeveloped land rented by ESA. It is nestled amongst farming land on the summit of a high plateau just miles from Lake of Bolsena, an area rich in numerous tourist establishments, largely for camping, agrotourism and bed and breakfasts.
The 8,350-panel solar array is one of the largest concentration of photovoltaic modules on one site in the region. It is also the largest project in the Castel Giorgio council.

“This new solar farm builds on Canadian Solar’s rich heritage in serving Italy’s vibrant renewable market, and we’re pleased to partner with ESA to bring clean energy to Umbria,” said Shawn Qu, CEO of Canadian Solar. “This 2 MW project demonstrates Castel Giorgio’s energy leadership. The project utilized 4,150 Canadian Solar panels and 4200 Trina Solar panels. In its first year of operation, this newly commissioned array has the potential to generate 3.1 million kilowatt hours (kWh) — roughly the equivalent annual demand of 300 average-size homes. Utilizing a proprietary monitoring system to track energy produced and store historical data, ESA can monitor the system from anywhere in the world.

The solar energy array was designed, engineered, procured, constructed and managed by ESA utilizing local labor. The solar farm will be operated and maintained by ESA. Enel, Italy’s largest power company, will purchase the electricity generated by the system through the feed-in-tariff program at a predictable rate.

What are Elastometric Adhesives?

Elastomeric adhesives exhibit excellent bonding characteristics while providing a tough, waterproof bond that will not crack or become brittle. They outperform silicones, acrylics, and rubber cements with greater strength, durability, and surface versatility.

Resistant to a wide-variety of chemicals and environments, elastomeric adhesives are impervious to dilute acids and dilute caustics and can be submerged in fresh or salt water once they are completely cured. After leveling 26 feet of land, ESA Renewables completes construction of a 1 MW solar farm in Cherokee County, North Carolina.

Lake Mary, FL May 19, 2011 – ESA Renewables, LLC recently commissioned a 1 megawatt (MW) solar farm in Murphy, North Carolina. The solar installation is located on a 16 acre parcel of land. Prior to construction, the site required extensive earth moving work, including the leveling of 26 feet of dirt to balance out the site for optimal installation and energy generation.

Murphy, North Carolina, is the county seat of Cherokee County located in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains. Should I Use Methyls or Ethyls?

Classic cyanoacrylates are represented by ethyl and methyl chemistries. Generally, the methyls offer better bond strengths on metals, the ethyls providing better strengths on everything else. Substrate selection and bond line configuration directly influence adhesive performance.

For example, two polished bare metal surfaces are best bonded with a methyl grade. By comparison, better results would be generated by an ethyl grade when bonding a single bare metal surface, such as an emblem to an automobile fender. Why? The automobile fender is painted, and while composed of metal, the adhesive is in contact with the acrylic paint layer, a plastic surface. To summarize; use methyls when bonding bare metal-to-metal, ethlys for everything else.

Benefits of Thermally Conductive Acrylics

Structural acrylics provide specific adhesion for bonding electrical components with high thermal conductivity such as heat sinks and circuit boards. These thermally conductive acrylics are ideal for use in applications such as the production of LED lighting for the following reasons:

Dissipation of Heat
Heat trapped and not dissipated by the components can lead to premature component failure and costly repair and replacement. To prevent this from happening, thermal conductivity can be assured and electrical shorting prevented by using thermally conductive acrylics. Because of the insulating characteristics of the acrylic adhesive, the heat is not retained and costly repairs and replacements can be avoided.

Self-Leveling for Good Contact
Using thermally conductive acrylics that offers self-leveling or self-shimming properties can ensure the adhesive has a good initial contact with a substrate. This type of leveling action reduces the adhesive to a uniform layer thickness of .005 - .007" on each application. Adhesion shear strength is important to bonding performance, but the desired adhesion strength cannot be achieved if the adhesive does not have a good initial contact.

No Mechanical Devices Needed
Another benefit of thermally conductive acrylic adhesives is that they replace mechanical devices and silicone greases. When using this type of structural acrylic adhesive, it is not necessary to use mechanical devices such as fasteners, clips, screws or rivets for assembly. Thermally conductive acrylics even negate the need for silicone greases that can trap contaminants. The adhesive alone is sufficient in providing the most efficient thermal transfer between transistors or microprocessors and their heat sinks.

No-Mix Application
Unlike epoxies, thermally conductive acrylics require no direct mixing. This no-mix application eliminates errors in mixing ratios and waste of products.

Room Temperature Cure
Thermally conductive adhesives are designed to have fast fixturing times. They are also considered room temperature cure adhesives meaning no heat is required to harden the adhesive.

The installation is one of North Carolina’s largest solar farms, the only one of its kind installed at a school district in the state and the third largest farm installed on a school property in the U.S.

The 998 kW solar farm is installed approximately 500 yards adjacent from the school and is situated on five acres. It consists of approximately 4,382 ground-mounted Canadian Solar CS6P polycrystalline modules, which are known for their industry leading PTC efficiency ratings. The system will produce an estimated 1.3 million kilowatt-hours each year, which is enough to power more than 150 average sized homes. My Father Was Unique, Shouldn't His Funeral Stationery Be Too?

Being raised in the Northeast as part of a large Irish family, the number of relatives I had always astounded my friends. By relatives, I don't just mean people that shared my last name or ones that could be plotted out on a family tree. I had a significant amount of closely related relatives. Here's what I mean, my Mother had one-hundred and thirteen first cousins. Her parents had many brothers and sisters. My Grandmother was one of thirteen and my Grandfather was one of seventeen. My sister and I, in comparison, only had a few first cousins, just eleven.

Overall, our family was huge but we were close, in proximity and in our personal relationships. My relatives held reunions almost yearly and there were several more times during the year we'd all gather, mainly for funerals.

My First Christmas Without My Dad

The Perfect Memorial Gift, a Holiday Remembrance Ornament

My Father passed away in January of 2008 after a long struggle with respiratory issues which stemmed from years of smoking. He smoked when my sister and I were kids even when we begged him not to as we rode in the backseat of the car going on family vacations. He smoked when my Grandmother was in the hospital dying of breast cancer, from smoking. He smoked when he got up in the morning, when he cut the grass, after he ate dinner at night. It was hard to picture him at a time when he didn't have a cigarette in his hand, up to his mouth or just lighting up another one - even though he had yet to finish the last.

My Dad was diagnosed with lung cancer in 1982. We were on a family vacation to Ireland and England when he first got sick. Five years later, and after a quarter of his right lung had been removed, my Dad was declared cancer free. But, the years of smoking had taken it's toll and would linger with him and cause many medical problems for the rest of his life.

The months after my Father passed were some of the most difficult of my life. Not only had my Father died, I had left a job I'd had for a dozen years, I had recently gotten divorced, and two of my beloved golden retrievers had died. Like most things in my life, when things get tough, I jump in and fight.

I needed a project -- something to keep me busy. I think better when I'm busy. Buying and renovating my home with my fiancé was probably what kept me sane during those difficult months after my Father's death. After six months of work, we finally were able to move in and planned to invite both families to celebrate Christmas day in our new home.

I knew the first Christmas without my Dad would be tough. But, I didn't really know exactly how I would feel or what would happen. All I knew was I was that fifteen people were coming for dinner and I was cooking.

Thoughts ran through my head. Christmas Day. A home my Father never lived to see. The hours of labor I had put into it with him looking down on me were over. Now it was time to celebrate the holiday, with my family.
In the back of my head I kept expecting to see him, for him to just show up, to tell me Merry Christmas, and to say what a great job we did with the house. But, at the same time, I knew different.

As we opened the presents, my Mother handed me a box. Just something for the tree, she said. I unwrapped and opened the box and felt the tears start burning down my face. My fiancé had been in the other room. Walking in, he was startled to see me so upset standing in front of the tree with my Mother. What's wrong? All I could do was to hand him the box. Inside was an ornament with the words: Dad, January 13, 1928 - January 3, 2008.

My Mom had found a poem and had carefully typed out part of it on a small card and enclosed it with the holiday ornament. The card read: Have a Merry Christmas and Wipe away that tear...Remember, I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.

Safety. Assisted living centers are set up to provide a safe, comfortable environment for elders. Just the fact that there are other people around makes communal living safer than being alone in a house. Also, most assisted living centers have alerting systems so if residents have emergencies in their own apartments or rooms, they can summon help.
Meals. Appetites can diminish as we age, plus many people don't enjoy eating alone. In assisted living, meals are provided and they often offer many choices of food. But the biggest plus may be that people have company for their meals.
Transportation. Most assisted living centers provide group transportation for shopping and to community events. Each center is different, but the ability to go where they want is important to elders, and many seniors can no longer drive, or choose not to drive in heavy traffic.
Less worry. Even renters have to actively contact a landlord if there are plumbing or other problems in their apartment, and often they must follow up on repairs. Seniors can be taken advantage of by unscrupulous contractors and repair people. There's no worry about the senior letting in a stranger to fix their bathroom pipe or getting bilked on the bill.
Socialization. Socialization is perhaps the most important reason why many people who insist that they will hate assisted living end up thriving. Many elders have slowly gotten so they don't want to go out of their home because it's too difficult to get where they want to go. Significant lifelong friends have health problems or have died.

While assisted living isn't the answer to every elder's living problems, it does help many have a healthier, happier life. This, in turn, often increases life expectancy. However, quality of life may be the key factor in the growing success of good assisted living facilities, as it should be with every service we provide for our elders.

Caring for Parents with Alzheimers

Identifying the Seven Stages of Alzheimers

When an elder parent is diagnosed with Alzheimers it can be a scary, emotional and stressful time. By understanding the process of the disease you may feel more prepared to cope with the changes that may occur with your aging parent.

The progress of Alzheimer's has been documented in an endless amount of patients, and experts have found that most of them will go through seven stages of disease progression. As with any medical issue, the duration and symptoms might vary, but the general decline of Alzheimer's remains the same.

No Impairment. Individuals at this stage show no marked decline in their cognitive function. No memory problems show up on a regular basis. In fact, your loved one might seem absolutely fine.
Very Mild Impairment. Forgetfulness begins at this stage. Lapses in memory and basic thoughts might occur, such as familiar words or names. Forgetting small details, like if they took their medication that morning or where they put their glasses, might be more common.
Mild Decline. Usually, at this point, family and friends have begun to notice the symptoms. A person who was once able to organize and plan now seems lost with the details. Losing things is more common, and they might begin having performance issues at work.
Moderate Decline. In medical interviews, the problems are now clear. Forgetting personal history, recent events, and how to handle complex tasks, such as paying bills or planning dinners, happen much more frequently. Your loved one might be very aware something is wrong, and that leads to acting withdrawn or subdued in social situations.
Moderately Severe Decline. Major details, such as their address or phone number, become hard to remember. While they may remember their own name and the names of those important to them, such as a spouse or a child, this stage of Alzheimer's begins to etch away at basic information, such as the current date, time, or season. Day-to-day tasks, such as cooking, might not be safe any longer.
Severe Decline. At this point, your loved one might be losing their short-term memory. They may need more help with basic activities, such as dressing and using the toilet. They might also experience behavioral changes, such as feeling suspicious or experiencing hallucinations. Someone at this stage might engage in repetitive behaviors or wander away, only to become confused and lost.
Very Severe Decline. In this final stage, they may lose the ability to speak coherently. They may need help with general hygiene, and may eventually lose muscle coordination and the ability to control movement. Their muscles typically grow rigid, the reflexes become unpredictable, and eventually even swallowing could become be impaired.

According to the Alzheimer's Association, Alzheimer's is currently the seventh leading cause of death. Someone develops Alzheimer's every 70 seconds, and though it more often affects the elderly, some individuals develop Alzheimer's in their 50s, 40s, or even their 30s.

How to Choose an Assisted Living Center

When you are confronted with the question of senior care for your loved one, the many options available can be downright daunting. Choosing an assisted living center or a nursing home is not a decision to be taken lightly. Here are a few practical tips to help make the decision--and the transition--easier for everyone involved.

Begin Slow. Start with hiring help for basic chores, such as mowing the lawn or running errands. As the need for caregiving increases, if possible, add more in-home care.
Open the Conversation. Talk to your aging parents about what the future might hold. Discuss their medical issues and what their options are for long-term care. Making a decision may not happen overnight, so be patient with them as they sort through their emotions.
Offer Choices. When staying at home is no longer realistic for your elderly parents, sit down to talk about assisted living centers or nursing homes. Allow them to make many of the decisions on their own, within reason. Bring their doctor into the discussion as ask for their opinion as well.
Make Legal Preparations. Long before a long-term care decision must be made, consider the legal roadblocks that might hinder any eldercare choices. Talk to your loved one about finances, durable power of attorney, and other legal factors.
Show Them You Care. When you do place your aging parent in an assisted living center or nursing home, visit them often and talk with them daily if at all possible. Pay attention to their care, follow up on any complaints, and become an advocate for them. Most of all, remind them how much you care about them, and show them that their comfort and health is your utmost concern.

Choosing to have your elderly parent placed in an assisted living center or a nursing home is a difficult decision; but with open lines of communication between you and your loved ones, that rocky road can be made much smoother.

I think it's a big step to write that first article and get it approved. Many people wouldn't take the time to sit down and write something, never mind go the extra steps (and there were many) to register, create a profile, jump through all the hoops and then submit that article, fingers crossed, to the editors. So, when I saw the acceptance email this morning...I did a little "YAY ME!" dance!

The potential for me to repost, use social media, social bookmarking, and other internet tricks and tips to promote this article, myself and more importantly, my client, is huge. It's like discovering there was one more cold diet coke in back of the refrigerator on a hot summer day, when you thought you were out! ProNet Career Resources: A hire calling
Howie Appel’s nonprofit is devoted to helping the unemployed

It’s 5:30 p.m. Time for Howie Appel to go to work. He raises his arms and calls the monthly meeting of ProNet Career Resources to order in a loud voice. For the next two hours, the 62-year-old dynamo will move at a pace that most 20-somethings would find hard to keep up with. Partcheerleader, part-coach, part-instructor, the executive director of this nonprofit unemployment support group, encourages, advises, and critiques his way around the room of jobseekers. Gesturing at his Power Point presentation one moment, taking questions the next, he is on a mission to help the unemployed find meaningful employment.

“My heart is in ProNet,” he says. “I’m passionate about helping people.”

Howie, who lives in Lake Mary with Marla, his wife of 32 years, started running the local chapter of ProNet in 2003. At the time, most of the networking was done online. In June 2008, members started asking him to hold an in-person monthly meeting because an increasing number of people were out of work. Because of his day job, he scheduled the meeting at night.

And then his life changed. The hardest working man in job placement suddenly found himself a victim of the recession. A recruiter who specializes in hiring engineers, Howie was laid off almost a year ago. But knowing that people are counting on him, he has continued running ProNet, while conducting his own job search.

The father of two grown children is taking the same advice he gives other folks who get downsized – don’t dwell on the past. Be motivated and proactive, and use ProNet to start building your future.

Membership in the group is free. ProNet, which has about 500 members, exists solely on donations, and is in the process of establishing 501(c)(3) tax exempt status so that the organization can apply for grant money.

On the night Lake Mary Life attended the monthly meeting, about 40 unemployed and underemployed people –mostly professionals in the over-50 age group – came to the meeting room at the Central Branch Library in Casselberry looking for support, advice, and information. Howie, and the 15 dedicated volunteer members of the steering committee who help him run the program, were more than equal to the task.

During the meeting, Howie urged participants to modernize their approach to job searching. He recommends the online business network LinkedIn as a resource for contacting and being seen by potential employers.

“It’s not who you know,” he says. “It’s who knows you. You’ve got to be unique. You’ve got to stand out.”

Jobseekers also eagerly participated in the resume breakout session. During this time the group broke into smaller groups led by human resource professionals who helped applicants improve their resumes. Some of the tips included: making sure resumes are free of typos and abbreviations, avoiding use of the word I, and starting off with a summary of how you can help the company instead of listing your objective.

“The company doesn’t care what you want to do,” says Howie. “They want to know what you’re going to do for them.”

The meeting ended after guest speaker Inez N. Rodriguez, a career management consultant, gave attendees information about parlaying volunteer work into a career. Then Howie held a gas money 50/50 drawing and raffled off donated burrito and ice cream coupons as door prizes to encourage cash-strapped visitors to return to the next meeting. The truth is he doesn’t have to. Each month attendance increases. Most come because of word of mouth, but many are so grateful for Howie’s help; they keep returning as volunteers even after they are employed. Lake Mary resident Ray Shedden was out of work for six months before Howie and the ProNet team gave him the tools to land a new job as director of sales and marketing with Multicom in Longwood.

“Volunteering is very important to me,” says Ray, an engineer by trade. “ProNet helps on a number of different levels. First, it gets you out of the house. Some people give up. It’s so easy to get down. If you get out, you start thinking about options. You meet with positive people. You get an emotional and mental recharge. You network and slowly but surely people are finding jobs.”

Public relations and marketing professional Maureen McHale of Longwood says Howie showed her how to see herself in a new light after she left her most recent job. She started marketing her skills and became a freelancer with several clients.

“I have a lot of reason to be thankful to Howie and ProNet,” she says. “He provided the motivation, support, and knowledge at a turning point in my life.”

The End of Hand Crafted Content

Old media loves nothing quite so much as writing about their own impending death. And we always enjoy adding our own two cents – the AP not knowing what YouTube is, the NYTimes guys reading TechCrunch every day, etc.

Speaking broadly, I like what Reuters, Rupert Murdoch and Eric Schmidt are saying: the industry is in crisis, and the daring innovators will prevail. Personally, I still think the best way forward for the best journalists, if not the brands they currently work for, is to leave those brands and do their own thing.

But as one of the innovators in the last go round, I think there’s a much bigger problem lurking on the horizon than a bunch of blogs and aggregators disrupting old media business models that needed disrupting anyway. The rise of fast food content is upon us, and it’s going to get ugly.

Old media frets over blogs and aggregators that summarize content and link back to the original source. They can’t make a business in that world, they say, so they run the other way and try to find a way to protect and charge for content.

These are the cavemen, or whoever, who were afraid of fire when it was discovered because it burned, or was too technologically advanced to really understand. The smart guys used it to cook their meat and keep them warm, and multiplied.

For our part, we throw a party when someone “steals” our content and links back to us. High fives all around the office. At least there’s some small nod in our direction. And the aggregators like TechMeme can figure out who broke the news. Page views are lost, but reputation is gained.

But for every link there are dozens of sites that outright steal our content with no attribution. Not just spam blogs, even the NYTimes does it. This isn’t a copyright issue – the stories are rewritten by actual people. But it’s far cheaper to simply take the news and rewrite it – if you can get away with it – than to hire people who do actual journalism. Over time, it becomes a competitive tax that is difficult to bear.

But even then, companies like ours can find a way to compete.

So what really scares me? It’s the rise of fast food content that will surely, over time, destroy the mom and pop operations that hand craft their content today. It’s the rise of cheap, disposable content on a mass scale, force fed to us by the portals and search engines.

On one end you have AOL and their Toyota Strategy of building thousand of niche content sites via the work of cast-offs from old media. That leads to a whole lot of really, really crappy content being highlighted right on the massive AOL home page. This article, for example, is just horrendous. One of AOL’s own blogs trashes the company’s spinoff, rambles for miles without any real point, and adds a huge factual error to top things off (”the company is losing money”). Hiring a bunch of people who couldn’t keep their old media jobs and don’t have the stomach to go out on their own and then slapping little or no editorial oversight onto these masses of sub-par journalists leads to an inevitable conclusion – cheap, crappy content. And that crappy content is given a massive audience on the AOL portal.

On the other end you have Demand Media and companies like it. See Wired’s “Demand Media and the Fast, Disposable, and Profitable as Hell Media Model.” The company is paying bottom dollar to create “4,000 videos and articles” a day, based only on what’s hot on search engines. They push SEO juice to this content, which is made as quickly and cheaply as possible, and pray for traffic. It works like a charm, apparently.

These models create a race to the bottom situation, where anyone who spends time and effort on their content is pushed out of business.

We’re not there yet, but I see it coming. And just as old media is complaining about us, look for us to start complaining about the new jerks.

My advice to readers is just this – get ready for it, because you’ll be reading McDonalds five times a day in the near future. My advice to content creators is more subtle. Figure out an even more disruptive way to win, or die. Or just give up on making money doing what you do. If you write for passion, not dollars, you’ll still have fun. Even if everything you write is immediately ripped off without attribution, and the search engines don’t give you the attention they used to. You may have to continue your hobby in the evening and get a real job, of course. But everyone has to face reality sometimes.

Forget fair and unfair, right and wrong. This is simply happening. The disruptors are getting disrupted, and everyone has to adapt to it or face the consequences. Hand crafted content is dead. Long live fast food content, it’s here to stay.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Basics

1) Title Tags or Permalinks

Two of the most determining factors in Google's ranking are your domain name and title tag. For example, a domain name such as: http://www.web-development-sydney.com will generally get ranked higher than http://www.companyname.com, assuming that they had identical keywords and page content.

Keywords in the domain may not be possible for some that have already registered a domain, so it’s too late to change. An alternative -- and also a useful tactic -- is to add your keywords into the names of your pages, such as:

http://www.companyname.com/web-development-services.html

2) H1 Tags

The Google ranking algorithm dictates that if you're using an h1 tag, then the text in between this tag must be more important than the content on the rest of the page.

Here's a quick example:

By enclosing the text between h1 brackets, Google sees this text as more important than text enclosed in "p" brackets.

By default, H1 tags aren't the prettiest in terms of formatting, so using a CSS style to override the default look is usually a good idea: H1 { color: blue; font-family: Verdana; font-size: 16px }

3) Top Site Submission

Submitting your site to dmoz.org, Yahoo! and other directories is also an important step to increase the number of sites linking back to yours.

4) Sub-Directory Submission

Directories are a wonderful way to get links to your site, and as a bonus, you will often receive very targeted traffic. While some are free listings, other are paid listings, so be sure to read the rules for each site before submitting your site.

You also should choose your categories wisely, especially when there are multiple categories that are suitable at one site. There are many different techniques for selecting one category over another. They include:

a) Choosing the category that is closer to the root directory (the index page of the site). For example, a link on www.example.com/business/index.html would be much more desirable than a link on: www.example.com/business/homebiz/home/index.html

b) Selecting the category with the fewer links. With fewer links, and thus less competition, you increase your odds of a visitor clicking through to your site. Also be wary of categories with more than 100 listings per page.

c) Select the category that has the higher PageRand or WebRank. Since links with higher PR are more beneficial, this is another important way of selecting which category to list in.

d) You will also find directories in many different market areas. Do a search in Google or Yahoo for directory with keywords that compliment your site, and you will likely find more to submit to.

e) You also want to ensure that you are submitting to directories where the link will benefit your site. Some directories are set up so that you will get zero value for that link in the search engines, and the only benefit will be from the traffic on that directory that happens to click through to your own site.

5) Sitemap

Google Sitemap is a file which contains URLs and some supplementary information for all the public pages or documents of your website. There is no proof that a Google Sitemap will directly affect your ranking in anyway; however, it can help Google to crawl your site better which may result in a more complete index of your page. It is important to frequently update the sitemap and resubmit it to Google when new pages are added.

6) Keywords

When making new posts or pages, make sure that you are targeting your search keywords properly. Try to include those keywords in the titles for which you want to be searched and indexed. If your content is unique and you have chosen the right keywords, search engines will quickly pick up your articles and index them. Use variations for your keywords and include them in different phrases.

Search engines rank your pages by keywords in the following order:

Prominence and accuracy of the keywords
Frequency of the keywords
Concentration of the keywords
Closeness within the keywords
Placement of the keywords in the content

So, be sure that you have a balanced article before publishing it to your audience and please do no spam your keywords because everyone hates it, including the search engines.

Sprinkling keywords throughout your page content can also improve your sites keyword density. Keyword density simply means the ratio of optimized keywords to the rest of the content on your page. It is usually expressed as a percentage, and should be between 7% and 10% for each page on your site.

Don't overdo the keyword density, however, but don't overlook it either. A good example would be:
Before: Company name provides web design and site management services to our clients.

After: Company name provides web development services to the Sydney region in Australia

7) Links Should Have Meaning

Update your anchor text (the text acting as a link) to have better keyword value. Both internal and external links should have meaning, and stay away from using “here,” “click here,” “this,” etc. as links.

Incorrect: If you’re looking for Twitter badges for your site, click here.

Correct: Here are some Twitter badges for your site.

8) Internal Linking

The more internal links we have, using our key words to link from page to page, the more the search engines will recognize our site as important for those terms and give us a higher page rank.

9) Content is King

I can’t emphasize this enough. The quality and richness of your content make more of an impact on page rank than any of the tips to follow. Strive to have unique and frequently updated content on your website and blog, and it will drive up your ranking.

10) Social Bookmarking Plugins

With the introduction of social bookmarking websites like Del.icio.us, Stumbleupon, Redditt, Digg etc., getting targetted traffic to your website is easier than before. People will bookmark your website if it is useful to them and has good content. Every person who bookmarks your website helps you in getting an incoming link.

You can link to the bookmarking sites so that its easy for your visitors to bookmark your website. Once someone bookmarks your website, there are chances that he will return back to your website sometime later. He might even share that bookmark with his friends/family which can get you more visitors.

A social bookmarking plugin should be installed to enable visitors to bookmark and submit our website and blog posts to various bookmarking sites like Digg, Reddit, Stumpleupon, etc. The most popular plugin for social bookmarking nowadays is AddThis.

11) Back Links

The toughest part of the Google SEO process is back-links. Back links are websites that link directly to your website. The general principal is the more back links you have, the higher your pages will be ranked, as your website must be good if so many other sites are linking back to it. When considering the inbound links to your website, you just can’t get enough of them.

Setting up back links takes time and needs to grow in steady, slow, natural increments or the search engines will suspect you're using a link farm (not a good idea). By posting in forums, on other blogs or websites, each and every day will build back-links (keeping in mind that the sites contacted should be relevant but not competitive) e.g. - If you sell chocolate, partnering with a company that sells Roses may just be a good idea. Within a couple of weeks, you should have a good 100 or so sites linking back to yours.

12) Different Types of Link Building Strategies

a) Link Exchange

The most widely used and predominant link building technique is the exchange of links with other like-minded websites. This can be done through one-way link exchange, reciprocal link exchange or a clever three-way link exchange. One way link exchanges are hard to do as it only requires the target website to link back to you. People will only link to your website if they are paid or in lieu of any other incentive.

Reciprocal link exchanges are easy because you are also putting the target website’s link on your website, therefore, the give and take rule applies here.

Finally, there is the little known three-way link exchange technique. Let me give you an example of how its done. Say, you own websites “A” & “B” and want good inbound links for website “A”. You go out and do a three-way link exchange with a webmaster who owns the website “C”. When doing the exchange, you put C’s link on your website “B” (instead of putting it on website “A”), and C puts “A” link on their website. So, you are basically gaining one way link for your website “A” without losing any Page value.

In order to initiate a link exchange, you will have to contact a website’s administrator by sending an email stating what you want to do. Make sure your e-mail is courteous and you explain what benefit the other website will get out of the link exchange. You can also try visiting different webmaster forums where you can find many people wanting to do link exchanges.

b) Link Baiting

This is the most organic way of getting unlimited back links. Link baiting basically means offering some kind of unique content (bait) to your visitors and in turn they link back to your website. For example, e-books, templates, custom scripts, custom graphics etc. I guess you get the idea. You can insert your website’s link in that content and as long as that content holds value and is available on your website, it is certain that people will use it and link back to you automatically. It will have a lasting effect for your website’s page rank.

c) Article Submissions

Depending on the niche of your website, you can write quality articles and submit them to various free article directories on the Internet. Article directories allow you to put link back to your website in the author resource box so that will give you back links and traffic too. If people like your article, they might even directly link to it.

d) Press Releases

Another effective way to spread the buzz about your website is by doing press releases. You can write press releases about your website or a particular section and submit them to press release distribution services such as clickpress, webwire, businesswire, openpress etc.

e) Blog Commenting

When you are visiting other people’s blogs, you can leave comments on their posts. Some bloggers allow you to put your website’s link along with the comments which can help you build links. Sometimes, the link that you put will have a no-follow tag attached to it which will not give any page rank value to your website, but it can still send some extra visitors.

f) Forum Posts

Try and become a member of all the popular forums that are related to your website’s topic. Most of the forums will allow a certain number of links which can be added to your signature below every post you make. You can add your website(s) link(s) there and build back links.

g) Creating Contests

Last but not the least, a viral way to make good back links is to hold a number of contests on your website. You can even offer a small amount of money for the winner of the contest. If money is short, then you could offer something else that is readily available with you as the prize. You can then ask people to link back to your contest and this will get you some quality one-way links.

Marketing Your Way to a New Career

Recently, an unemployed recruiter I met through P roNet Career Resources of Central Florida, a job search and networking group, asked me for my help. "With all your marketing skills, can you help me get the word out about my resume makeovers?"

This gentleman, Howie Appel, had been a recruiter for engineers and IT professionals for over 20 years. Currently, he's in transition, like so many others. To make some money on the side, he offers his 'resume makeovers' to other transitioning professionals. He will review several resumes at each of the monthly meetings for ProNet, free of charge, in front of the group so that we all learn not to abbreviate anything, use all caps, misspell words or commit other unprofessional acts on a resume. If someone wants a more in depth and personal review, he offers his services for that on the side. His objective is to help others find new career opportunities and find one for himself as well. And, in the meantime, he has found a niche to make some extra cash.

So, what does all this have to do with marketing yourself? Everything.

As a group, ProNet members strive to offer each other help. This man's talents lie in human resources - so he's a natural choice to get advice on how your resume is seen from the other side of the desk. He is using his professional skills and marketing himself every time he goes to a networking event or reviews a resume. A lot of these people that he's helping will have jobs (soon, I hope) and the companies they work for may need a recruiter. Who's name will they remember? That's right, the one who helped them first.

As for me, I'm a marketer at heart and so my advice to the group is and has always been to 'market yourself.' I've spent the better part of 13 years marketing companies and products. When I left my last position, I made the mental switch to stop thinking that products and companies are the only things you can market...and I chose to 'market me'.

I have started and stopped writing this post several times. I cringe to think that so many people will take my advice that this great marketing channel I have found will dry up. But, I think those fears are unfounded. First, not everyone is dedicated enough to do what I'm about to suggest. And second, the online world is still developing and growing. I doubt in my lifetime, that the leads I can generate by marketing myself (and marketing companies and products) online will ever dry up. So, putting my fears aside - I'll tell you what my advice to my unemployed recruiter friend was...

To refresh your memory (since I've babbled so long), his question was: "With all your marketing skills, can you help me get the word out about my resume makeovers?" I offered the following advice:

"I would suggest writing up a "top three mistakes" paragraph about the top three mistakes people make when putting together a resume. Make them generic suggestions and only a short paragraph, but informative. In the next paragraph mention something personal, like how you've been a recruiter for x-number of years and have seen all sorts of "bad" resumes where people just don't get the job because of these and other mistakes. Then offer your services, saying for a nominal fee of $X, I'll review your resume and give you pointers on landing that next job.

Once you've got this put together, I'd post it in every LinkedIn group that has to do with finding a job, career search and even the marketing and executive groups. Find groups with lots of exposure, meaning lots of members - both employed and unemployed people. Add a catchy title, like 'Fired before Hired' or '3 reasons I won't hire you'...

Hopefully doing things like this will draw attention to yourself. You have to do these types of posts at least one a week. Change them up and keep approaching it from the angle of trying to help others with less push on you getting paid to do it. Some of the posts you probably shouldn't mention your "services" at all. You can write about anything that's in your circle of expertise to draw attention to yourself.

If you have a blog, use it to push traffic from LinkedIn to your blog. This allows you more internet space for promotion. You'll have not only had your LinkedIn profile to promote your previous employment and qualifications, but also your blog can become somewhat of an online portfolio of your knowledge and skills. Sounds like a lot of work, and it is, but it works. You have to really market yourself."

Granted this isn't the only thing I'd suggest to promote yourself, as networking in general is probably more important, but it's a step out of the ordinary. It's doing something productive and promoting yourself. It's getting off the couch, away from the job boards, and it works.

Several people I've discussed this with have had comments like, "I don't want to appear fake." and "I am uncomfortable about saying I'm the best at this or that and gushing over my qualifications." To those people I've had to say, be yourself. Go into it with the idea that you're there to help others, not yourself. And, just tell the truth. If you're not an expert, say you're not an expert, but then say, here's what you do know. Ask for help from others, you may actually learn something along the way and make a great networking connection with someone online.

Bottom line in marketing yourself... Just do it.
(Hmm, that could could be a great slogan. Now, why didn't I think of that?)
