Clean Footprint’s Leader Marches Against Climate Change in New York

Hundreds of thousands of people worldwide attend the People’s Climate March   

Cape Canaveral, Fl., September 24th, 2014 – Joining more than 400,000 people in midtown Manhattan alone, and hundreds of thousands worldwide, John Porter, Chief Executive Officer and Founder of Clean Footprint, attended the People’s Climate March on Sunday in New York City.

"Being part of the Climate March in NYC was invigorating! The huge turnout of very motivated people gives me hope that our political leaders will get the message and take some serious action. This might take the form of a carbon tax, permanent solar tax credits, removal of tax breaks for fossil fuels and someday the total phase out of the burning of fossil fuels. Hundreds of thousands of people turned out for the climate march which reminds me that the civil rights movement, clean water act and the clean air act all started with these types of marches," said Porter.

Dubbed on Twitter, #CLIMATE2014, activists mobilized in cities across the globe last Sunday to march against climate change. New York was host to one of the largest rallies.

As demonstrators made their way down Sixth Avenue during the People’s Climate March, Porter had this to say, ”This event, with over 2,700 venues in more than 150 countries is perhaps the largest climate change protest in history – and an important one. This summit is historic because the fight against climate change is about the people who are standing up in our communities to organize, to build power, and to shift power for the good of our planet.”

Around the world, celebrities, political leaders, and tens of thousands of people attended the marches against climate change.  French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, primatologist Jane Goodall, former US Vice President Al Gore, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon participated in the People's Climate March in New York.

Clean Footprint Executive Meets with EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy

Prior to the carbon emission limits placed on power plants Central Florida clean energy company discusses air pollution and clean energy initiatives with EPA Administrator.

Cape Canaveral, Fl., June 3rd, 2014 – Recently, the Founder of Clean Footprint, John Porter, met with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Gina McCarthy.

The Administrator traveled to Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando to discuss energy initiatives prior to the Clean Energy Plan announced yesterday. During her visit she participated in a classroom experiment to test air pollution, met with students studying environmental science and discussed leaving a cleaner planet for the next generation. Also in attendance were Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and EPA Regional Administrator Heather McTeer Toney.

“New federal regulations that aim to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from power plants will have a large economic upside, largely through health savings, says Gina McCarthy, administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency. "But that doesn't mean that the share of electricity from coal is going to be significantly diminished."

ESA Renewables Commissions First Community Solar Farm in Central Florida

Central Florida solar company developed, constructed and will operate solar array

Lake Mary, Fl., February 18th, 2014 - ESA Renewables (ESA), an industry leader in providing turnkey solar solutions, is pleased to announce the completion of a 400 kilowatt (kW) community solar farm on the Gardenia campus of the Orlando Utilities Commission (OUC) located at 3800 Gardenia Avenue in Orlando, FL.  The array was commissioned in October by ESA and has been acquired by Spear Point Energy; OUC has agreed to purchase the generated power from Spear Point Energy under a 25-year power purchase agreement. 

The solar farm is the result of many companies coming together, including Sylvester and Cockrum, ReneSola, Advanced Energy, Chint, Schletter, ESA, and Spear Point Energy.

“The technology innovation of using Schletter micro-piles as foundations and precast concrete pads, in addition to the engineering design using a high density module with a modular canopy with long spans, has cut the construction schedule in half and minimized the risk factors in a rainy environment like Florida,” said Javier Latre Gorbe, Vice-President of Technical Operations for ESA Renewables.  “The solar array serves dual purposes as a solar farm and a canopy to 151 LED-lit parking spaces for OUC employees and guests.”

“We are pleased to have worked closely with ESA Renewables on the OUC community solar array project, contributing our services and capabilities of the micro-pile technology and carport structure to the farm,” said Ryan Kelly, Vice President of Sales for Schletter Inc. Mr. Kelly went on to add that “The carport structures are comprised of mainly aluminum, making it maintenance free. This saved an incredible amount of time and money during the installation process.”

"The CPS 3 Phase string Inverters are ideally suited for use in solar canopy designs. This decentralized approach provides reduced installation and BOS costs, lowers O&M costs and improves system uptime," said Jesse Batista Eastern and Latin American Sales Manager for Chint Power Systems America.

“It’s humbling working with firms like ESA, which takes great pride in not only its work, but the selection process to determine which modules to use in its projects,” said Brian Armentrout, Director of Marketing for ReneSola America.

The solar farm covers approximately 2.5 acres of the parking area of OUC’s Gardenia Campus and is expected to produce about 540,000 kWh annually – enough to meet the power needs of about 40 homes.  As a community solar farm, it is the first of its kind in Orlando, and only the second in Florida. 

Subscriptions to the community solar farm sold out in less than a week after OUC offered its customers the opportunity to purchase blocks of solar power from the array.  Subscribers receive credit on their electricity bills for their share of the solar farm’s production. The Gardenia solar farm has 39 OUC subscribers, and while initially they will be paying a slight premium for their electricity, their rate is locked in for 25 years.

"Half of our customers live in multi-family housing and do not have the ability to add solar to their homes. Innovative projects like this allow our customers to purchase solar power without the upfront costs or hassle of installing it and with the added bonus of being able to lock in their power rate," said Byron Knibbs, OUC Vice President of Customer & Sustainable Services.

“Spear Point Energy proudly invested in the project due to several factors: the high quality team, construction, material, equipment and the smart way OUC structured their community solar program. It is exciting that OUC is working with the community to allow Orlando residents to own the power generated by this solar project,” said Michael Johnson, President of Spear Point Energy. “We are pleased to be a part of bringing the benefits of community solar to Orlando.”

“This solar farm provides sustainable, green energy and eliminates the upfront expenses, installation and equipment maintenance costs associated with individuals installing solar at their own home or business,” said Lindsay Herold, Chief Operating Officer for ESA Renewables. “ESA is managing ongoing operation and maintenance (O&M) costs and services for the solar farm.”

A ribbon-cutting celebration was held at OUC’s Gardenia Campus near John Young Boulevard in Orlando at the end of October.  The solar farm can be seen from Interstate 4, the main artery running through the city.

Winter Park Falls "In Love" with its New Solar Panels On Valentine's Day

Winter Park, Fl., February 13, 2014 - On Valentine’s Day, Friday, February 14, at 10:30 a.m., the City of Winter Park will show how much it “loves” its newly installed rooftop solar panels at the Public Works Compound located at 1409 Howell Branch Road.

Last summer, the City Commission approved an agreement with Clean Footprint, central Florida’s leading solar development and finance company to add solar energy into our city’s electric power supply
portfolio. This solar project, developed by Clean Footprint and ESA Renewables, a Florida-based solar company, generates 100kW of clean, green energy and is the city’s first, largest and only solar energy project to date.

Clean Footprint Sets Appointments with Solar Developers for Solar Power International 2013

Florida-based solar finance and development company to set appointments with solar developers regarding shovel-ready projects

Clean Footprint Attends Clean Energy Congress 2.0 in Tallahassee, Florida

Energy business leaders and stakeholders gathered in the Historic Capital for a full-day session to propose, debate and vote on energy policy priorities for the 2014 session
Cape Canaveral, Fl., October 7th, 2013 – Representatives from Clean Footprint, Central Florida’s leading solar finance and development company, attended Clean Energy Congress 2.0 held in the Historic Capital, Senate Chamber in Tallahassee, Florida  on Monday.  The purpose of the Congress was to eliminate obstacles for a robust competitive energy market and diversify the states generation mix.

“The Congress develops a vision for Florida’s energy future,” said Wes Morrison, Director of Sales and Marketing for Clean Footprint.   “It also enables Florida energy leaders to debate and discuss policy proposals which will propel Florida energy policy past any political gridlock holding our state back.”

Clean Energy Congress 2.0 gave stakeholders a chance to hear from experts, consider proposals for policy changes and vote for measures to help keep energy dollars within the State.

The Clean Energy Congress’ goal is to bring business leaders, educators, innovators, and policy makers together to debate Florida energy policy.  Sixty-seven delegates were invited to attend to assure a good mix of stakeholders; however, the event was also open to the public.  Rethink Energy Florida and Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, with the assistance of the office of Rep. Michelle Rehwinkel Vasilinda, hosted The Clean Energy Congress 2.0. 


The goals and policy considerations delegates brought to Congress to debate were to:
1.    Remove barriers to diversifying Florida’s energy mix through a robust renewable energy market, with the goal of the near-term development of at least one gigawatt (1 GW) of new solar energy in Florida.
2.    Create an open and transparent Public Service Commission process.
3.    Meet electricity demand through energy efficiency that costs less than new power plants.
4.    Make Florida a leader in clean transportation.
5.    Boost Florida’s economy through jobs in the renewable sector.

Following the debate, John Porter and Kurt Easton of Clean Footprint and the company’s advisors Chris Castro and Susan Glickman attended the Clean Energy Business Legislative Reception in the Rotunda and Senate Chamber.  The reception recognized Clean Energy Champions in The Florida Legislature.

Orlando Mayor Dyer Works-Along with OUC and ESA Renewables to Install Solar Panels on City Facility

Yesterday, Orlando Mayor Dyer worked along with OUC Vice President of Customer and Sustainable Services Byron Knibbs and ESA Renewables to install solar panels on the roof of the City’s Fleet Management Division Building. The solar project is part of Green Works Orlando, the City’s sustainability initiative to engage everyone who lives, works and visits Central Florida in the effort to “go green.”


“Through Green Works Orlando, the City is working to ensure Orlando remains one of the most environmentally-conscious cities in our country,”said Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer. “A key part of our plan is investing in the next generation of clean, green energy, like solar, which will not only help us continue to prevent pollution, but also create new high-tech, high-wage jobs for our community and further diversify our economy.”

At the event, Mayor Dyer and Knibbs joined the ESA Renewables construction team to help mount the three-foot by six-foot solar panels to the roof of the City facility. When complete in February, a total of 1,392 solar panels will be installed in the three array system, which covers about 50,000 square feet.

“OUC is proud to help power Orlando’s designation as a Solar America City through projects like this,” Knibbs said. “In fact, later this year we will begin work on Central Florida’s first community solar farm at our Gardenia facility. The community solar farm will allow customers to purchase solar power without the expense and hassle of installing it at their home or business.”

The 417 kilowatt solar array is estimated to save the City $800,000 in energy costs over its 25-year life. In total, the project will generate enough energy to power about 43 average Orlando homes and offset emissions equivalent to planting 2,400 trees and taking 2,375 vehicles off the road per year.

“We are proud to be a part of the City’s efforts to move towards sustainable energy,” said Jeffrey Burkett, President of ESA Renewables. “Not only does this project contribute to the health of our environment, it also has a positive effect on our economy through the creation of 20 green jobs.”

ESA Renewables Secures Spot on Top 100 Solar Contractors List

The year 2012 proved to be an exciting one for ESA Renewables with many significant benchmarks including placing 25th on Solar Power World’s 2012 Top 100 Solar Contractors.

As we ring in the New Year, one thing is for certain, 2013 will prove to be an exciting year for ESA Renewables. New solar projects are on the horizon and ones under construction now will soon be commissioned. The solar industry in itself is expanding and growing with new demand. There’s no denying, future of solar keeps getting brighter!

Looking back on 2012, a few specific events come to mind that put in focus ESA’s achievements and growth for the year. Let’s recap them now:


  1. The first event was receiving the Intersolar AWARD. In July of 2012, ESA Renewables was presented the Intersolar AWARD for Solar Projects in recognition of its Martins Creek Elementary School Solar PV project which demonstrated strong innovation. The Intersolar Award recognizes projects, both large and small, which utilize advanced technology, incorporate aesthetic and architectural concepts and exemplify outstanding services and products. ESA Renewables’ Martins Creek Elementary School installation in Murphy, North Carolina is one of the largest solar farms on school grounds in the US at 1MW. The system, which covers 5 acres, produces 20% more energy than initially projected: 1.3 million kWh of electricity. Some funds generated by the project equate to keeping approximately two school teachers employed annually.
  2. ESA is expanding across the globe! In August of 2012, ESA announced its expansion to Central and South America. As part of the great strides ESA is achieving in these regions, the company opened a new development office in Chile.
  3. Focusing on high quality workmanship, perfection of installation methods and quick commissioning, ESA was able to construct a 500kW rooftop solar installation in just three weeks from start to finish. The rooftop solar installation located in the Asheville, North Carolina area is expected to generate the annual amount of electricity as consumed by 45 houses in the area.

Should You Purchase a DE Filter or a Cartridge Filter?

When choosing between a diatomaceous earth, otherwise known as a DE filter, or a cartridge filter, both DE and cartridge filters do an adequate job of keeping pool water clean, but they have distinct benefits and each work optimally under different pool conditions.

Let’s compare and contrast the two as we review some of the most frequently asked questions regarding a new filter purchase:

What Type of Filter Will Work Best for my Pool Size? 
Cartridge filters work better on pools that are 12,000 gallons or less. DE filters, on the other hand, can more than adequately clean a small pool and can also tackle the demands of cleaning larger pools – even the largest ones that can be found at a resort or hotel.

Which Type of Filter Removes Dirt Particles Better? 
Diatomaceous earth is mined and is the fossilized exoskeletons of tiny diatoms. The DE is used to coat “grids” in the filter housing and act as tiny sieves to removed debris. Using this filtering system, DE filters can eliminate dirt particles as small as 1 micron -- including dust, pollen and other allergens. Cartridge filters remove particles of 20 microns and larger. For the most part, the difference will not be noticeable – because anything less than 35 microns is not visible to the human eye.

Which Filter is Cheaper to Own and Operate? 
The initial cost to purchase a cartridge filter is lower than a DE filter, but it may be necessary to replace the cartridge every year or two. Depending on the model and size of your filter, cartridges will cost anywhere from $40 and up to replace. DE filters cost more initially, but the main thing you will have to replace is the diatomaceous earth. DE costs less than $1 a pound and most DE filters require 2 to 4 pounds per cleaning.

How Will My Filter Choice Affect My Pump?
Cartridge filters are designed to run at lower pressure than DE filters. This puts less back-pressure on the pump which enables you to get more flow and turnover for an equivalent pump size. A DE filter will run at higher pressures, leading to some inefficiency and flow loss.

DE Filter Cleaning 
To know when a DE filter needs to be cleaned, you must monitor the filter pressure gauge. When the gauge exceeds a predefined limit, the filter must be cleaned. The DE filter is cleaned by backwashing about 400 – 1000 gallons of pool water and dumping the white, sandy, dirty water. Then, new DE powder needs to be dumped into the skimmer to recoat the filter. DE is dangerous to breathe and handling can cause your hands to get dried out and cracked. Therefore, a dust mask and gloves should be worn. During the filter cleaning process, you will also need to refill your pool to replenish the gallons of water you lost during backwashing. The chemical levels must also be tested and more chemicals added to replace those lost in the backwash.

Cartridge Filter Cleaning 
The maintenance for cartridge filters is much easier than with DE. Cleaning a cartridge filter simply involves removing the cartridge and hosing it off with a garden house.

What Else Should I Know About My Filter and Pool? 
Your pool builder should teach you how to operate your new pool system – including filter cleaning, pump operation, etc. It is also important that you learn how to balance the chemicals of your pool. This will be imperative to maintaining a healthy and trouble-free swim season. For those wishing to extend the swim season, consider adding a solar pool heater. Which is Better, a Two-Speed Pump or a Variable-Speed Pump?

Efficiency is the name of the game when shopping for a replacement pool pump or when having one installed during construction. Many pool owners are shocked to learn that their pool pump can cost more to operate than the rest of their home appliances combined. Selecting the right pool pump can save a home owner thousands of dollars each year.

How to Select an Efficient Pool Pump 
An efficient pool pump will enable you to operate it at the lowest speed needed to accomplish the job – whether you’re filtering, heating, cleaning, running spa jets or other water features. Although it may take the pump longer to work at a slower speed, you’ll be using far less energy because reducing a pumps speed actually reduces the power needs. What to Expect When Having a Gunite Pool Constructed

If you are thinking about having an in-ground gunite pool built, this article can help you understand the phases in which your pool will be constructed and provide tips on avoiding pool construction pitfalls.

Many homeowners believe that one crew will be responsible for the construction of their entire pool; however, this is not a standard practice. Your pool builder will most likely sub-contract out different phases of the job to other trade contractors. During each phase of the construction, you'll see different individuals such as graders and excavators, steel and plumbing workers, electricians, a gunite crew, tile and coping tradesman, plaster and pool decking crews, a technician to connect your pool pump, filter and even a solar pool heating contractor.

Your pool builder should be a good project manager, in that he or she will be apt in avoiding delays and keeping the quality of workmanship high by managing and coordinating the sub-contractors.

Construction Tip: In most cases, your pool builders sub-contractors will provide acceptable or even exceptional quality products and services; however, there is one item in particular that you should purchase directly from the installer, NOT your pool builder -- your solar pool heater.

Often a pool builder will only offer the cheapest solar pool heater on the market, because that's the only product he can get. Not only will it more than likely be a sub-par solar pool heater, the retail mark-up, will be substantial. By avoiding the middleman and contracting directly with the actual installer of the solar pool heater -- a certified, professional contractor, it will save you $500-$1500 on the installation. You'll also receive a top quality product, you'll avoid the middleman markup, and the finger-pointing for any warranty or repair issues.

Let's take a look at each phase of pool construction:

Stage 1 Pool Design

When designing your dream pool with your builder, there are many things to consider. You and your designer will need to review:
  • Lot size and the topography of your land
  • Property line setbacks
  • Easements and underground utilities
  • Budget
  • Style and shape of the pool
  • Tile and coping options
  • Extra features, such as a spa, water feature, or planter beds, infinity edges, beach-type entrances, swimouts/benches, or shallow tanning area ledges
  • Pool deck including the size, materials, texture and accents
  • Pool equipment - slides or dives, ladders, railings, automatic pool cleaners, pumps, filters, heaters, and lights.
Once these decisions have been made, your pool designer can draw up the final plans and submit them to the city for the necessarily construction permits.

Construction Tip: Many Homeowner's Association will require the homeowner to submit the pool design plans to them BEFORE any construction work begins. Failure to follow proper HOA rules and regulations can cause delays, liens on your property and legal headaches.

Stage 2 Pool Excavation

The next step is to stake out and paint the shape of your pool in the yard. Any trees or shrubbery that will interfere with the pools design or fences that block access will be removed. A front end loader or a skid-steer loader can be used to dig the rough shape of the pool in just a few hours.

Construction Tip: Your builder should be able to warn you of and detail any additional costs you may incur in the excavation of the pool. For instance, if during the excavation they run into solid bedrock or if there is an underground spring or a high water table leaks into the digging area - you should be aware of any potential additional construction costs or delays.

Stage 3 Steel and Plumbing

Once the hole has been dug, it is reinforced with steel rebar to act as the pools skeleton and provide structural support for the shell. The rebar is bent into position approximately 2-4 inches from the walls. Then, the plumbers set the skimmers, returns, cleaner lines and drains in place. The electricians will also hang the pool light niches into the wall and connect the bonding wire to the shell at this time.

Stage 4 Gunite

Gunite is concrete that is shot out of a "gun" using high velocity air. As the concrete is shot behind and on top of the rebar, finishers use trowels to carve and sculpt it into the correct shape for your pool. The gunite needs to dry over the next several weeks before plaster can be applied.

Construction Tip: You may see cracks in the surface of the gunite during this phase; however, the plaster will cover these cracks and they will have no affect on the pools finish or ability of your pool to hold water. If, however, large or deep cracks form or an area crumbles, be sure to notify your builder.

Stage 5 Tile and Coping

As the gunite is curing, the perimeter tile and coping, the capstones of your pool wall, can be installed. Decks are also installed during this phase.

Stage 6 Electrical

Nearing the end of your pools installation, an electrician will install a breaker box, sometimes referred to as a sub-panel, in the area where the pool's pump, filer, and heater will be installed. The electrician will also connect the pool lights to junction boxes and run electrical conduit from those boxes back to the sub-panel.

Construction Tip: Most pool equipment will be located relatively close to the pool. Many people choose to build a small wall or plant a row of hedges to help hide the pool equipment from view and cut down on the noise when the filter is running. A small shed can also be build around the equipment, but be sure that the structure is properly ventilated so that your equipment won't overheat.

Stage 7 Plaster
 
Once the gunite has cured, the plaster crew will arrive to finish your pool's surface. The pool plaster is a waterproof layer, protecting the pool shell and steel, and providing a smooth layer that's not only easy to keep clean, but also is easy on your feet when swimming. In just 3-4 hours the plaster work will be complete and the crew will turn on the water to fill the pool.

Construction Tip: It's best to fill your newly plastered pool as quickly as possible without stopping. If possible, add extra hoses to fill the pool faster.

Stage 8 Pool Startup

You're almost done! Your pool builder will stop by to do the initial start-up of the equipment to ensure it's all in working order. He or she will also balance the chemicals in the water and schedule an orientation with you to review the future care needed, and the basic operations of the equipment.

Construction Tip: Your pools chemistry may fluctuate and require daily checks and the addition of specific chemicals for a while. If you do not know how to balance your pools chemicals, your builder can give you basic instructions, or you can hire a pool service, or visit your local pool store -- many will perform pool chemical analysis for free and also sell you the chemicals that you need to balance the waters chemistry.

During the eight phases of your pool's construction, there will be a lot of different people, equipment, noise, and mess, but in the end -- you'll be left with the luxury of being able to take a relaxing swim in your new pool. It will be worth the month or two of construction in the long run!
