Pavement markings
and safety signs are visible on almost every road and parking lot in the State
of Florida. Why is that?
The most basic form of motorist
information is the variety of pavement markings on streets and highways. These
stripes, shapes and symbols denote the rules of the road by giving lane
boundaries, guides for turning, crosswalk locations, and warnings of potential
hazards. Pavement markings work in conjunction with road signs and traffic
signals to give motorists a clear picture of the highway's characteristics. Because
pavement markings are directly in the driver's view of the road, they offer an
effective means of communication.
What
do the lines mean?
White and yellow lines are used along
pavement edges and between lanes to keep vehicles in line. These lines may be
solid or broken (long dashes), single or double which indicate when you can and
cannot pass another vehicle. Stop lines, crosswalks and parking spaces are also
marked by white lines. Symbols such as arrows are in white also; an exception to
this rule being the handicap symbol, which is marked in blue.
Yellow lane lines separate lanes of
traffic moving in opposite directions. Single yellow lines may also mark the
left edge of the pavement on divided highways and one-way streets. A broken
yellow line separates lanes of traffic moving in opposite directions.
Curbs are also often marked yellow in no
parking zones near fire hydrants or intersections. It is unlawful to park in or
drive through areas that have pavement markings indicating fire lanes or safety
zones.
The
lines in my parking area are faded, does it really matter?
Parking lot striping is required to keep
your parking area in compliance with current fire code and ADA specifications.
A complaint from a handicapped person or ADA or fire code inspector could mean
hundreds of dollars in fines!
