ESA Renewables Commissions First Community Solar Farm in Central Florida

Central Florida solar company developed, constructed and will operate solar array

Lake Mary, Fl., February 18^th, 2014 - ESA Renewables (ESA), an industry leader in providing turnkey solar solutions, is pleased to announce the completion of a 400 kilowatt (kW) community solar farm on the Gardenia campus of the Orlando Utilities Commission (OUC) located at 3800 Gardenia Avenue in Orlando, FL.  The array was commissioned in October by ESA and has been acquired by Spear Point Energy; OUC has agreed to purchase the generated power from Spear Point Energy under a 25-year power purchase agreement. 

The solar farm is the result of many companies coming together, including Sylvester and Cockrum, ReneSola, Advanced Energy, Chint, Schletter, ESA, and Spear Point Energy.

“The technology innovation of using Schletter micro-piles as foundations and precast concrete pads, in addition to the engineering design using a high density module with a modular canopy with long spans, has cut the construction schedule in half and minimized the risk factors in a rainy environment like Florida,” said Javier Latre Gorbe, Vice-President of Technical Operations for ESA Renewables.  “The solar array serves dual purposes as a solar farm and a canopy to 151 LED-lit parking spaces for OUC employees and guests.”

The solar farm covers approximately 2.5 acres of the parking area of OUC’s Gardenia Campus and is expected to produce about 540,000 kWh annually – enough to meet the power needs of about 40 homes.  As a community solar farm, it is the first of its kind in Orlando, and only the second in Florida. 

Subscriptions to the community solar farm sold out in less than a week after OUC offered its customers the opportunity to purchase blocks of solar power from the array.  Subscribers receive credit on their electricity bills for their share of the solar farm’s production. The Gardenia solar farm has 39 OUC subscribers, and while initially they will be paying a slight premium for their electricity, their rate is locked in for 25 years.

"Half of our customers live in multi-family housing and do not have the ability to add solar to their homes. Innovative projects like this allow our customers to purchase solar power without the upfront costs or hassle of installing it and with the added bonus of being able to lock in their power rate," said Byron Knibbs, OUC Vice President of Customer & Sustainable Services.

Hernon Manufacturing Installs Ammunition Sealant Dispensing System at Sellier and Bellot

Hernon’s custom Ammunition Sealant Dispensing System reduces production costs, saves time while increasing accuracy and quality of finished products

 Sanford, FL., January 27, 2014 – Hernon Manufacturing, the innovator in adhesives, sealants and dispensing equipment, is pleased to announce the installation of a custom ammunition sealant dispensing system at Sellier and Bellot in January.

 “Engineered with the capabilities of Hernon’s Autosealer 5500 Ammunition Sealant Dispensing and UV Curing System, the custom dispensing system built for Sellier and Bellot also has blank ammunition sealing capabilities,” said Edgardo Rodriguez, Director of Sales and Marketing for Hernon Manufacturing.

 The new sealant dispensing machine is capable of sealing the bullet and primer of various calibers of assembled pistol, rifle, and blank ammunition on a single machine, including .38, .40 S&W, .45, .357, .308 and more. In 15 minutes or less, the conveyor belt can be easily changed to accommodate the different calibers. In a simultaneous process, the Auto Sealer applies projectile and primer sealant, performs vision systems inspections and UV curing. More than 200 rounds per minute can be processed.

Line Striping 101

Parking lot line striping is a task that will be on a facility managers’ to do list at some point of their career.

When line striping and other pavement markings are clear to detect, visitors to your parking lot can park their cars easier, pedestrians are able cross safely and traffic flows are better managed moving in and out of the parking area.

 For a facility manager, it helps to understand the line striping process to be able to better plan for this necessary commercial maintenance service.

A local paving company can be contracted to re-stripe a parking lot. Once on the job site, the paving contractor will work with the facility manager to determine if the same lines will be re-striped or if a new layout would better accommodate the needs of the facility.

 If a new line striping layout will be created, the paving contractor will take measurements of your parking lot, and then draw a sketch. The new line striping layout will include the dimensions as well as any obstructions such as light poles, trees or other obstacles that can limit the number of parking spaces.

Each parking stall will be 18 feet deep and can be at 45, 50, 55, 60 or 90-degree angles. The depth of the parking lot and traffic flow will determine which angle will work best.

Following local zoning laws for handicap and fire zone clearances and distances, as well as the facilities requirements, an asphalt paving company can then paint the parking stalls and perform other line striping tasks as needed.

Preparing a parking lot for new line striping is half the battle. First, the weather must be taken into consideration. The line striping project should be scheduled during dry weather. Not only does the area need to be dry when the paint is being applied, it’s also important to avoid rainfall for at least four hours after re-striping.

Next, when the asphalt company is ready to start the project, the lot will need to be barricaded or roped off to keep cars from parking in the re-striping area. Once clear of all cars, the parking lot should be pressure washed to remove dirt, mildew, vegetation and other contaminants. After this step is completed, the asphalt pavement should be left to dry thoroughly. Depending on the temperatures and humidity, this could take a full twenty-four hours.

After the asphalt is dry, the paving contractor should use a landscape blower to remove any remaining sand, dirt or other particles immediately prior to beginning the line striping installation.

 The paving company will carefully measure and map out the parking lot layout using chalk or spray paint. Once complete, the paving contractor will use a walk-behind machine or manually paint the stripes.

 Alternate parking should be arranged for approximately 36-48 hours so that the area can be prepped, the parking lot lines striped and once the process has been completed, the area can have a full twenty four hours for the marking paint to dry. Although most line striping is dry to the touch within 30 minutes, for best application results, a full drying cycle should be allotted.

Hernon Manufacturing Receives Patent for Bullet Tip Identification Process

Central Florida manufacturer’s newly patented invention offers bullet tip identification while avoiding conventional drawbacks

Sanford, FL., January 24, 2014 – Hernon Manufacturing, the innovator in adhesives, sealants and dispensing equipment is pleased to announce its invention for bullet tip identification has received a United States Patent.

“Our bullet tip identification process is not limited to a specific size or shape of ammunition cartridge,” said Harry Arnon, President of Hernon Manufacturing. “The invention may be adapted as desired for use with any size or shape ammunition cartridge, including different caliber cartridges.”

Background of the Invention
Rifle and handgun cartridges are shaped to be fired from a firearm that has a specific caliber. Because of this, the shape of the cartridges does not vary by manufacturer. Cartridge manufacturers often remedy this by stamping their names onto the bottom of the cartridge case to allow users to distinguish one brand from another.

A user may wish to identify ammunition to indicate training rounds, live rounds, caliber, etc. Conventional approaches to ammunition identification have been to either etch a mark into the exterior of the bullet or to paint the tip of the bullet. Unfortunately, these techniques have drawbacks such as poor and inconsistent adherence of the marking material, distorting the weight distribution of the bullet, affecting the ballistic performance of the bullet, affecting the firing trajectory of the bullet, or affecting the ease of loading.

Hernon’s Patented Invention 
Hernon Manufacturing invented a process to not only make a bullet tip identifiable, but also avoid conventional drawbacks. The Patent, number US 8,607,7-7 B1, is for Identifiable Ammunition and Related Methods.

“With our patented process, bullets can be made identifiable and distinguishable from other bullets or cartridges by placing a user identifiable marker on the bullet. The marker may be made of paper, plastic, metal or any other suitable materials and may include one or more letters, words, numbers, symbols, designs, logos, etc,” said Arnon.

In accordance with the invention, an identifiable bullet may be made by forming a bore in the projectile portion of the ammunition, placing a marker in the bore, introducing a flowable polymetric material into the bore, and hardening the polymetric material. This provides a substantially transparent window through which the marker can be viewed by a user for identification of the bullet.

“The polymeric material is an adhesive that cures or hardens when exposed to ultraviolet radiation. “Suitable UV curable polymeric materials include, but are not limited to, acrylate, methacrylate, epoxy, urethane, rubber, or combinations thereof,” added Arnon. “The UV curing process may either be performed manually by using a hand held UV curing light or using an automated process in which the polymeric material and curing process are performed in the same mechanized production line.”
