Benefits of Private Music Lessons

As parents, we only want what’s best for our children.  Private music lessons offer many benefits including non-parental adult support and encouragement as well as overcoming obstacles independently.

Learning to play a musical instrument can be more of a daunting task than a child, or parent may expect.  Fingers, tongue, breathing, posture, note reading, and counting all come into play with this foreign object put into your child’s hands!

Working with a private music teacher can help a student keep up with peers when in a group setting – in band practice at school, for example.  Children learn at different paces and will master certain techniques in different time frames.  Private music lessons helps your child concentrate on skills he or she is lacking and helps polish those skills already learned.

Private lessons can also minimize a child’s frustration of learning to play an instrument.  Although frustration can instill determination in some, in others it may lead to discouragement and a sense of failure.  It would be sad to see a child give up learning an instrument in the early stages when all that was needed was a little personal attention.  Every child deserves an opportunity to enjoy playing an instrument – not be completely frustrated in the process.

Private lessons also set the child up for success.  With a private instructor, a child learns the fundamentals more quickly and can receive immediate praise directly from their teacher during the lesson.  Once a solid foundation is built, the child can keep learning, playing and succeeding – which instills confidence.

When a student is enrolled in music lessons with a private instructor, it is easier for the child to stay motivated – even after a few years of playing.  A private instructor is knowledgeable about different music styles and can help the child discover what new music to learn, what goal to pursue next.

Young musicians need to learn how to practice.  A private music instructor can spend time with a student on practice skills.  Sometimes more time is spent on this than on other aspects.  Whether the student is a beginning or an advanced musician, quality practice time is required on a regular basis to master each skill.  Practice does make perfect!  A private music teacher will send the students home weekly with the proper practice pieces, skills and instruction on how to practice at home.

Another benefit of private music lessons is that you can select the time slot that works best for you and your child’s schedule.  And finally, private music lessons are also helpful for those who are shy, or reserved.

Private music lessons can maximize a young musician’s opportunity for musical success and fun.  Consider enrolling your child today.

Should You Purchase a DE Filter or a Cartridge Filter?

When choosing between a diatomaceous earth, otherwise known as a DE filter, or a cartridge filter, both DE and cartridge filters do an adequate job of keeping pool water clean, but they have distinct benefits and each work optimally under different pool conditions.

Let’s compare and contrast the two as we review some of the most frequently asked questions regarding a new filter purchase:

What Type of Filter Will Work Best for my Pool Size?
Cartridge filters work better on pools that are 12,000 gallons or less. DE filters, on the other hand, can more than adequately clean a small pool and can also tackle the demands of cleaning larger pools – even the largest ones that can be found at a resort or hotel.

Which Type of Filter Removes Dirt Particles Better?
Diatomaceous earth is mined and is the fossilized exoskeletons of tiny diatoms. The DE is used to coat “grids” in the filter housing and act as tiny sieves to removed debris. Using this filtering system, DE filters can eliminate dirt particles as small as 1 micron -- including dust, pollen and other allergens. Cartridge filters remove particles of 20 microns and larger. For the most part, the difference will not be noticeable – because anything less than 35 microns is not visible to the human eye.

Which Filter is Cheaper to Own and Operate?
The initial cost to purchase a cartridge filter is lower than a DE filter, but it may be necessary to replace the cartridge every year or two. Depending on the model and size of your filter, cartridges will cost anywhere from $40 and up to replace. DE filters cost more initially, but the main thing you will have to replace is the diatomaceous earth. DE costs less than $1 a pound and most DE filters require 2 to 4 pounds per cleaning.

How Will My Filter Choice Affect My Pump?
Cartridge filters are designed to run at lower pressure than DE filters. This puts less back-pressure on the pump which enables you to get more flow and turnover for an equivalent pump size. A DE filter will run at higher pressures, leading to some inefficiency and flow loss.

DE Filter Cleaning
To know when a DE filter needs to be cleaned, you must monitor the filter pressure gauge. When the gauge exceeds a predefined limit, the filter must be cleaned. The DE filter is cleaned by backwashing about 400 – 1000 gallons of pool water and dumping the white, sandy, dirty water. Then, new DE powder needs to be dumped into the skimmer to recoat the filter. DE is dangerous to breathe and handling can cause your hands to get dried out and cracked. Therefore, a dust mask and gloves should be worn. During the filter cleaning process, you will also need to refill your pool to replenish the gallons of water you lost during backwashing. The chemical levels must also be tested and more chemicals added to replace those lost in the backwash.

Cartridge Filter Cleaning
The maintenance for cartridge filters is much easier than with DE. Cleaning a cartridge filter simply involves removing the cartridge and hosing it off with a garden house.

What Else Should I Know About My Filter and Pool?
Your pool builder should teach you how to operate your new pool system – including filter cleaning, pump operation, etc. It is also important that you learn how to balance the chemicals of your pool. This will be imperative to maintaining a healthy and trouble-free swim season. For those wishing to extend the swim season, consider adding a solar pool heater. A solar pool heater can be installed when your pool is being built or even years later. To have a solar pool heater installed, contact a professional solar company, not your pool builder. Doing so will not only save you $500 -$1000 on the installation, but also -- buying direct, you’ll be assured to get a quality product, installed by a certified installer.

Which is Better, a Two-Speed Pump or a Variable-Speed Pump?

Efficiency is the name of the game when shopping for a replacement pool pump or when having one installed during construction. Many pool owners are shocked to learn that their pool pump can cost more to operate than the rest of their home appliances combined. Selecting the right pool pump can save a home owner thousands of dollars each year.

How to Select an Efficient Pool Pump
An efficient pool pump will enable you to operate it at the lowest speed needed to accomplish the job – whether you’re filtering, heating, cleaning, running spa jets or other water features. Although it may take the pump longer to work at a slower speed, you’ll be using far less energy because reducing a pumps speed actually reduces the power needs. Just like with your car – you’ll get better gas mileage driving slower, than when driving at faster speeds. Some manufacturers claim that two-speed pumps are nearly equivalent to variable-speed pumps in their ability to conserve energy; however, the truth of the matter is – they aren’t. In fact, these pumps are vastly different. One critical difference between the two types is that two-speed pumps use less energy-efficient induction motors, while new variable-speed pumps use permanent magnet motors – like those used in hybrid cars. Two-speed pumps also come factory-built with two unchangeable speeds. These speeds are rarely the most efficient for all the functions of a pool. In fact, they can actually be less efficient than a single-speed pump.

Benefits of a Variable-Speed Pump:
1) Super-efficient permanent magnet motors used in variable-speed pumps can save pool owners up to 90% on energy costs compared to single or two speed pumps.
 2) Permanent magnet motors also produce less heat and vibration. This translates to less stress and wear on pump components leading to a longer life for a variable-speed pump.
3) Variable-speed pumps are exceptionally quiet.
4) Variable-speed pumps can be adjusted for peak efficiency even when equipment or features are changed or added. Adding a solar pool heater, changing a filter or adding a water feature? No problem. Just set the adjustable digital controls to the new optimum speed to operate with the lowest energy use.
5) Variable-speed pumps have built-in diagnostics to protect them from overheating, freezing, or voltage irregularities adding protection for a longer life.
6) Variable-speed pumps are completely adjustable in terms of speed and water flow. This allows a pool owner to be able to alter water features like deck jets, fountains or waterfalls.

Another Energy Saving Idea
In addition to saving energy with a variable-speed pump, homeowners looking to extend the swim season in an eco-friendly way should consider having a solar pool heater installed.

Solar pool heating is the most cost-effective way to heat your pool. Unlike a propane or natural gas pool heater with metal parts, a quality solar pool heater will keep you swimming in a warm, comfortable pool for the next 20 to 30 years. And, it’s truly a “clean and green” option!

Another thing most homeowners may not know is that if they buy their solar pool heater directly from a certified, professional solar company, instead of their pool builder, they will save $500-$1500 on the installation. Buying direct, homeowners are assured they’re getting a quality product and avoiding any potential finger-pointing involving a middleman for any warranty or repair issues.

What Does UL Listed Mean?

The UL Mark, sometimes called an Underwriters Laboratory Mark, on a product means that UL has tested and evaluated representative samples of that product and determined that they meet UL requirements. Under a variety of programs products are periodically checked by UL at the manufacturing facility to make sure they continue to meet UL requirements. The UL Marks may be only used on or in connection with products certified by UL and under the terms of written agreement with UL. In addition to these marks, UL also provides access to the marks required in a number of other key world markets.

The UL Listing Mark is one of the most common UL Marks. If a product carries this Mark, it means UL found that representative product samples met UL's safety requirements. These requirements are primarily based on UL's own published standards for safety. This type of Mark is seen commonly on appliances and computer equipment, furnaces and heaters, fuses, electrical panel boards, smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, fire extinguishers and sprinkler systems, personal flotation devices, bullet resistant glass, and thousands of other products.

Room Temperature Cure Adhesives for LED Manufacturing and More

In recent years LED manufacturing as well as aerospace, aircraft manufacturing, precision machining, electronics and other high-tech industries have been developing rapidly. This growth also increases the need for bonding electrical heat sink components with high thermal conductivity.

Structural acrylic provides specific adhesion for bonding electrical heat sink components with high thermal conductivity. Heat trapped and not dissipated by the components can lead to premature component failure and costly repair and replacement. Using a structural acrylic, thermal conductivity is assured and electrical shorting is prevented by the insulation characteristics of the adhesives. Additionally, the acrylic adhesives replace mechanical devices and silicone greases that can trap contaminants.

These room temperature curing adhesives save time, effort, are energy-saving, easy to use and can not only reduce the cost of adhesive, but can also simplify the process.

Hernon Manufacturings’ Dissipator®, a thermally conductive room temperature cure adhesive, is designed for bonding electrical components to heat sink with a controlled gap. Developed by Hernon, this custom product line, paired with Hernon’s dispensing equipment solutions are ideal for use in the production of LED lighting.
